What is Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL)?
A therapeutic approach for anyone seeking personal growth and development. EFL embraces the philosophy that humans learn best by doing. Clients are given the space to project and analyse their situations, make connections and find their own solutions. Exercises involve interacting with horses and engaging in a task, focussing in the present moment and looking towards the future. Clients take the skills they learn beyond the field and into everyday life.
Why include horses?
Our horses facilitate the therapeutic process by helping our clients understand how their thinking and interactions affect their wellbeing. Horses are truthful animals; they live in the moment by reacting to the energy, environment and people around them. This makes them a perfect partner for learning, as their feedback to our clients interactions are instinctive and insightful.
Horses are large animals. They are powerful and have the potential to reach high speeds. Often, however, they are incredibly calm, peaceful and still. This provides a friendly and nurturing environment, perfect for learning.
No riding takes place in our EFL sessions, you don’t need to be a rider to take part and you don’t need to have had any previous experience with horses. Each session is completely personalised for each client’s individual needs.
