How do I book?
You can book by contacting us via email or through the website’s booking form. If you’re unsure what’s right for you, we’re happy to help guide you.
Where are you located?
Amerron Acres is based in a peaceful countryside setting, in Edale, in the Peak District offering a quiet, natural space for reflection and connection. Full directions are provided after booking.
How long is each session?
1 to 1 equine facilitated learning sessions for children, young people and adults are 90 minutes long. This allows time for a catch up conversation to plan the session, an activity or two with the horses, some reflection time and time to take notes from the session.
We sometimes offer shorter 60 minutes equine facilitated learning sessions to younger clients.
Informal family sessions are 60 minutes long.
Group workshops are usually 2 hours long.
Tailored retreat weekends are also available to fit lengths, budgets and timescales of those attending.
Frequency and availability?
For 1 to 1 sessions, we recommend weekly sessions initially but are flexible with budgets and client availability. Please email info@amerronacres.co.uk for current availability or to be added to the waiting list.

What should I wear?
Wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear (such as boots or trainers). You’ll be outdoors, so layers are recommended.
What happens during a session?
Each session is guided and tailored to you or the group. You may take part in activities with the horses, reflective exercises, and gentle discussions to help you process insights and experiences.
What is equine-facilitated learning?
Equine-facilitated learning is an experiential approach where people work alongside horses to develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, communication, and confidence. You don’t ride the horses — the focus is on connection, observation, and guided activities on the ground. Sometimes we include horseback sensory sessions as part of a programme. This supports nervous system regulation alongside our other activities.
Our experiences offer a calm, grounding space to pause, reconnect, and gently explore what is going on beneath the surface — with the quiet, honest presence of horses guiding the way.
Who is it for?
We support adults, children, young people, and families who are navigating emotional challenges, mental health struggles, or simply finding life overwhelming.
This work is especially powerful for those experiencing:
- Anxiety, stress, or low mood
- Mild depression or emotional overwhelm
- Challenges with emotional regulation and managing big feelings
- Neurodiversity, including those who benefit from non-verbal, experiential support
- Low confidence, self-esteem, or negative thought patterns
- Challenging wellbeing and mindset
- School stress, friendship worries, or life transitions
- Feeling stuck, disconnected, or unsure how to move forward
- Family pressures, burnout, or difficulty finding balance
- A desire for calm, resilience, confidence, and self-awareness
- Those seeking support with their psychological wellbeing
Do I need any experience with horses?
Not at all. No prior horse experience is needed. Everything is guided by your facilitator Jess, and the horses are carefully selected for their calm and intuitive nature.
Is it suitable for my child?
It is suitable for children aged 6 and above. We ask you to complete a detailed referral form to check if equine facilitated learning is right and our practitioner is suitable for your child. Each programme is suited to the child’s engagement with the therapeutic process.
Our Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) is suitable for young people facing a range of challenges, including but not limited to:
Anxiety & Depression
Autism, ADHD & PDA
Emotional Regulation
Low Self-Esteem & Confidence
SEMH
EBSA/School Based Anxiety
Family/group sessions are tailored to the group and suitable for most people.
Is it suitable for me? (Adults)
Amerron Acres may not be the right fit for everyone, and that’s okay.
These sessions are not suitable for those looking for a quick fix or expecting the horses to “solve” problems for them. The experience works best for people who are open to reflection, curiosity, and personal insight.
It may not be the best fit if you:
- Want a highly structured clinical therapy approach
- Have severe or complex mental health issues and are not seeing a psychotherapist separately
- Feel strongly uncomfortable being outdoors or around animals
- Are unable to approach the experience with openness and respect for the horses
- Are seeking immediate answers rather than a process of discovery
- Are looking for traditional riding lessons or horse handling lessons

Is this therapy?
Equine-facilitated learning is not a replacement for psychotherapy, however it can be deeply therapeutic. Some people find it a helpful alternative or addition to talking therapies. We focus on the mind-body connection to explore personal growth, self-discovery, mindset and learning through experience rather than clinical diagnosis or treatment.
Is it safe?
Yes. Safety is a top priority. Sessions are structured, supervised, and designed with both human and horse wellbeing and welfare in mind. You’ll be guided and supported at all times. Our practitioner is fully qualified, DBS-checked, and trained in both safeguarding and first aid. We also have comprehensive health & safety and safeguarding policies in place, which can be provided upon request via email.
Do I have to interact closely with the horses?
You’ll be encouraged, but never forced. You can go at your own pace.
Can I book a single session or only courses?
Both options may be available. Some people prefer a one-off experience of a workshop or retreat, while others benefit more from a series of sessions for deeper exploration.
What if I feel nervous or unsure?
That’s completely normal. Many people feel this way at first. The environment is calm, supportive, and non-judgmental, and you’ll be guided gently throughout.
